THE ART OF SAYING NO
I’ve discovered a secret power, it’s the art of saying NO
I’m listening to my inner voice, demanding quid pro quo
I’m very much enjoying it, it’s making me feel good
Sort of braver and more honest, like I’ve entered adulthood
Before, if asked a favour, I didn’t hesitate
I’d say 'yes' immediately, my jobs would have to wait
I got in lots of muddles, so busy all the time
Doing other’s bidding – never doing mine
But people take advantage when you always say 'yes'
It seems the more you do, they respect you even less
They seem to think your niceness is a sign of being weak
Perhaps it’s human nature to trample on the meek
‘No’ felt like rejection to a loved-one or a friend
It somehow felt too rude and I thought I might offend
I’m practising this power now, it’s helping me to grow
‘No’ is my protection – I wield the shield of NO!
Changing habits of a lifetime, I’m strong and stand my ground
If I don’t want to do something, I don’t feel duty bound
No need to make excuses, honesty is my ploy
Just say 'I can’t be bothered', no need for being coy
Are you a people pleaser? Do you feel you’re being used?
It’s not too late to change your ways, requests can be refused
Face up to confrontation but don’t get in dispute
People will respect you when they see you’re resolute
It’s a journey of empowerment, you always have a choice
Just follow your own instinct, heed your inner voice
It’s a great philosophy, go on, give it a go
Next time you’re asked a favour, just say 'NO'!
